Heat is Multiplying Electric Bills in Lubbock

The Texas summer heat is kicking everyone’s butt in 2023! It won’t be going away any time soon either. With highs regularly over 100 degrees, Lubbock has now spent 15 of the last 30 days in the triple digits.

As anyone of sound mind would infer, when the heat bakes, demand for electricity goes up and higher electricity bills show up a months later… it can go 2x, 3X, even 4X. And we’re not talking penny stocks or crypto bubbles.

As is routine, every summer electric usage more than doubles on average as air conditioning units work hard to keep residents and businesses cool. This year a local homeowner in Central Lubbock faced a massive bill of over $2,500 for a 3,000 sq ft house. He said he expected his bill to be higher over the summer but not 5X… $2,500.

Electric Bill Mistakes Happen

An order was put in the field to check the meter and research the account. Apparently it acceptable that 1 of the 108,000 meters that are in the field will have problems or not operate properly.

The electric company should check usage based on previous years during the same time period. In this case, it was a faulty meter. The city said it will switch out his meter and take back his old one for testing. The elecritiy provider (Lubbock Power & Lighting) is expected to correct and update the bill.

Ways to Conserve Energy & Lower Electricity Bills

First and foremost, it’s not healthy or good for your body to stay at room temperature all day, much less all year. Changes in your environment within normal ranges stimulate your body’s systems. So simply set your thermostat 6 – 8 degrees higher to 78-80 degrees, especially while you’re away from home.

Moving air helps sweat evaporate from your body, which in turn cools you off. Use floor fans directly on your body, and utilize ceiling fans to circulate cool air in your home.

Plant vegetation and trees around the exterior of your home for shade and even insulate it heat. Just like a coat in winter traps warm air around your body, plants, trees, and shade do the same with cool air.

More cover up… put external covers on your windows to block direct sunlight from physically warming the structure of your house during hot months.

Replace your heating and air-conditioning filters every 2 – 3 months. If they get clogged with lint and debris, it forces your air conditioner work harder to cool the same.
